The castle was built in a square shape with two very high towers, one in in defense of the side east and the other in defense of the side west.
At the foot of the towers was built in the tenth century the church of Santa Maria Assunta (the present parish of Cerro al Volturno) which preserves two memorial stones of the Romans' XI century. The castle was built as well as giving very little chance of hitting the attackers, but allowed a strong defense as the massive walls were impenetrable and could be overridden only by ladders and ropes with even be launched within the walls. In self-defense was enough to reject the stairs and cut the ropes. Other means of defense were the hot liquids, bows, arrows, stones etc..
The castle of Cerro was altered several times over time and adapted to the different defensive requirements of the following centuries.
